Can-Am League Recap

Quebec 5, New Jersey 2

The Jackals gave Quebec quite the scare in the ninth inning, but just could not overcome the tremendous pitching performance of Karl Gelinas and the productive bat of Player of the Year Jonathan Malo. Game one of the 2013 Can-Am League Championship Series went the way of the Capitales, 5-2, as Gelinas came within one out of tossing a complete and Malo drove in three of the home team's runs.

New Jersey made its mark on the scoreboard early when John Lindsey delivered an RBI single in the first. But, the lead was short-lived. Malo roped a two-RBI single in the third to put Quebec on top in the third. Two innings later, Sebastien Boucher and Rene Leveret contributed to the lead with run-scoring singles of their own.

The way Gelinas was pitching, the 4-1 lead should have been enough for the Capitales. But, Malo came through again in the eighth inning. His RBI ground out brought home Royce Consigli to expand the lead to four runs.

Gelinas had kept the Jackals away from home plate since Lindsey's first-inning single, but New Jersey threatened again in the ninth. The Jackals took advantage of a Quebec error to score a run and put runners on second and third. The Capitales went to the bullpen with two outs and the tying run at the plate, but reliever Chris Cox struck out Danny Rams to secure game one.
