SportsTicker, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has named New Jersey INF Ricardo Cordova and New Haven RHP Jarrett Stawarz batter and pitcher of the week, respectively, for the week of July 7-17.
Cordova went 13-for-26 on the week with three doubles, a triple, three stolen bases, four RBIs and ten runs for the Jackals in six games. New Jersey's record in that span is 3-3, including a 1-2 record in the second half. On July 12, Cordova was 3-for-5 with a triple, a stolen base, three runs and two RBIs to lead New Jersey to a 16-2 pounding of Brockton. The native of Maracay, Venezuela is currently fifth in the Can-Am League with a .354 batting average and tied for the lead in triples with six (John Lindsey). He also boasts 12 doubles, nine steals and a .401 on-base percentage.
Cordova, 23, was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Dodgers in 1998 and began his career in the Venezuelan Summer League, batting .368 in 51 games for San Joaquin. After two seasons with the Great Falls Dodgers, he was released by the Dodgers and signed by the Cardinals. He got his start in the Cardinals' organization with the Potomac Cannons of the Carolina League in 2002, but was moved to the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League in 2003, where he batted .324 in 24 games. In 2004, Cordova signed as a free agent with the Nashua Pride of the independent Atlantic League. He batted .287 with four homers, 13 doubles and 41 RBIs in 103 games for Nashua. He's been with the Jackals since late April, and he's already established career highs in triples (6) and extra-base hits (21).
Stawarz had one start this week, a complete-game shutout against the Grays in New Haven's 5-0 win on July 12. He allowed only five hits and a walk, striking out six along the way. The win puts his record at 4-4 with a 2.22 ERA, second in the league to New Jersey's Isaac Pavlik (2.11). Stawarz has allowed eleven earned runs all season, coming on 42 hits and just 14 walks over 44.2 innings pitched. He's allowed just one homer all year, striking out 34. He hasn't thrown a wild pitch, and opponents are hitting just .259 off the Burlington, CT native.
Stawarz, 23, is in his first year of professional baseball out of Hartford University, where he led the team in wins (4) and complete games (4), and was second in strikeouts (58) and innings pitched (65.1) his senior season. He finished his career second all-time in strikeouts (175) and starts (38).
