Boston Pride News Release
Behind goals from five different players, the Boston Pride kicked off their season with a 5-1 win over the Metropolitan Riveters on Saturday night in their home opener at Warrior Ice Arena in Boston.
The defending Isobel Cup champion Riveters (0-3) scored first, but the Pride netted five unanswered goals, with four coming in the third period, to take the decisive victory.
After some quality chances for the Pride early, including a breakaway chance from Gigi Marvin, Amanda Kessel scored late in the frame, putting away a pass from Rebecca Russo to give the Riveters the 1-0 lead.
McKenna Brand's first professional goal knotted the score at one just over a minute into the second period. The teams traded penalties in the second, but neither capitalized on the power play.
The Pride offense then exploded in the final frame. Dana Trivigno netted the game-winner just over two minutes into the period on a pass from Haley Skarupa. The two combined again minutes later, this time with Trivigno setting up Skarupa for the 3-1 lead.
Defender Lexi Bender assisted on each of the Pride's last two goals, with Jillian Dempsey and Emily Field finding the back of the net in the final six minutes of the game.
Boston College alum and NCAA all-time goaltending wins leader Katie Burt made 17 saves, allowing just the one goal in her professional debut across town from her alma mater. Brand, Lauren Kelly, Toni Ann Miano and Denisa Krizova also played their first professional games.
Russo, Kessel and Kelsey Koelzer each had three shots on goal to lead the Riveters.
The Pride return home to Warrior next weekend, hosting the Connecticut Whale on October 20.
Meanwhile, the Riveters will look to break into the win column in their home opener, a matchup with the Minnesota Whitecaps at the Prudential Center at 2 p.m. on October 20.
