Burn, Galaxy End in 1-1 Draw

Published on May 17, 2003 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

SOUTHLAKE, Texas -- A tremendous strike from substitute Brad Davis eight minutes from time provided the equalizer as Dallas Burn and Los Angeles Galaxy remained winless on the season, playing to a 1-1 tie Saturday night at Dragon Stadium despite Los Angeles playing a man down for more than a half-hour.

The defending MLS Cup champion Galaxy (0-2-4, 4 pts.) took the lead through Gavin Glinton's first goal of the season late in the first half, on a similarly tremendous long-range effort, but allowed Dallas (0-2-3, 3 pts.) to get back into the game when Ezra Hendrickson was sent off in the 63rd minute for a second yellow card.

Davis's goal gave the teams their second draw between each other this season, and the sixth draw in their last eight meetings. It was also a fourth home match without a victory for Dallas, while Los Angeles continues their eight-game road trip to begin the campaign without taking the full three points.

Both coaches brought Latin playmaking midfielders into their teams, but it was Los Angeles coach Sigi Schmid that saw the better effect. Former El Salvador international Mauricio Cienfuegos made his first appearance of the year for the Galaxy, as did Colombia international Oscar Pareja for the Burn, but from the outset it was Los Angeles which created the better chances.

>From the opening moments Los Angeles striker Carlos Ruiz was involved, on three occasions in the first half seeing good opportunities saved well by Dallas goalkeeper D.J. Countess, one after Sasha Victorine's shot came rebounding back off the post.

Cobi Jones was the midfield orchestrator for the visitors throughout the half, and it was from one of his corner kicks that Countess was finally beaten - though Los Angeles still couldn't find the back of the net. He found Alexi Lalas for a clear header which left the 'keeper no chance, but Pareja was well-positioned to head off the line.

Then Los Angeles deservedly took the lead two minutes before the halftime break. Another corner was weakly cleared out, where Glinton came running on and hammered a first-time effort from 25 yards that sailed into the upper left corner of the goal. It was the Galaxy's first goal in more than five hours (302 minutes).

Immediately after the restart, the Galaxy once again came close to grabbing a second. Jones streaked in on the left and floated a cross which nearly slipped under the bar at the far post. Countess did well to flap it away, but only as far as Cienfuegos at the edge of the area who sent it back goalward, but Steve Morrow was on the line to head away.

Dallas began to slowly come back into the match, but the job was made considerably easier when Hendrickson was sent off for a second bookable offense. The Galaxy began to settle in defensively and try to ride out the storm, but the equalizer came from an unlikely source.

A corner on the right in the 82nd minute saw Antonio Martinez collect the ball at the right corner of the area, and lay it square to Davis outside the restraining arc. He hammered a drive which sailed into the upper left corner, leaving a stunned Hartman rooted to his line.

Ryan Suarez was sent off for a second yellow card deep into second-half stoppage time, leaving both teams with 10 men for the 10-minute extra time period, but neither side created any real opportunities.

Both teams are on the road next Saturday, Dallas traveling to the Meadowlands to face MetroStars (7:30 p.m. ET), while Los Angeles heads to Kansas City to face the Wizards (7 p.m. CT), the match to be shown on ESPN2 on a tape-delay basis beginning at 1 a.m. on Sunday, May 25.
