Baltimore Burn News Release
On Saturday, May 10th, The Baltimore Burn hosted the Erie Illusion as they approached the midway point of their schedule. And there was no 'Illusion' that the Burn was ready to play with an overwhelming victory of 58 - 3. Choosing to receive, the Burn set up for the opening kick-off. With a 30-yard blast, the Burn returned it 20 yards to start the game on the Illusion 45-yard line. Showing their offensive strength, the Burn went 5 plays and 45 yards later to score the first points of the game. After a 40-yard kick, the Illusion now had their chance to prove what they were made of. On their first play, the Illusion exploded with a 25-yard run up the middle. However, three plays later, the Burn defense stepped up and intercepted the ball. Shortly afterwards, the Illusion returned the favor with a 28-yard interception return of their own. Unable to get into the end zone, the Illusion had to settle for a field goal, ending the quarter with the Burn up 7 - 3. The Burn offense took to the field again to show their strength. With a deep pass to #80, Regina Nolan, and a couple of long runs by #3, Nina Mouzone, the Burn added another seven points to their score. Only accumulating 4 yards on their next possession, the Illusion was forced to punt for the first time. On the next drive, the Burn was stunned by the Illusion's defense for only a gain of 18 yards. But the Burn would not settle for that. After a run for zero yards, an incomplete pass, and a quarterback sack for a loss of two yards, the Illusion punted once again. But the Burn offense quickly bounced back. Five plays later on a short pass to Nolan, they increased their lead by seven more points. Time for a trick play? The Burn's special teams unit recovered an onside kick allowing for the offense to continue their onslaught. With several hard-nosed runs, #32, Gina Schnell, rushed for the Burn's fourth touchdown of the game. With just under one minute left in the half, the Illusion got another shot. Expecting the long pass, the Burn's defensive back, #10 Nikia Green, got her first interception of the season and giving the ball back to the offense in good field position. The Burn took over with 26 seconds left and on the Illusion's 38-yard line. The first play of the drive saw another deep pass to Nolan and another Burn touchdown ending the half 32 - 3. The Illusion received the ball on their own 36-yard line to start the second half. The Illusion put together their longest possession of the game with a 14 play drive, only to be stopped short of the endzone. Down by 30 points, could the Illusion control the Burn offense? On their first possession of the second half, #16 Tara Watanathai hit #38, Molly Avery for an 80 yard touchdown pass. As the quarter was ending, the Illusion, still unable to get the ball moving, punted. Nine plays and 51 yards later, the Burn rushed for their seventh touchdown of the game. The Illusion never gave up as they continued to strive for some points. Late in the fourth quarter, they tried all that they had. With a deep pass, Burn's defensive back #40, Mozette Timmons, intercepted the ball and ran 80 yards for her first defensive touchdown of the season. The Illusion then threw their fourth interception to #23, Corrine Carson, with two minutes left. On their last drive of the game, the Burn offense would undoubtedly score again. #22, Raynette Savoy, capped the score by blasting 6-yard run to finish the game, leaving the score a 58 - 3 victory.
With a stellar performance, the Burn offense dominated with 408 total offensive yards, 240 on the rush, 168 yards passing and 9 touchdowns. Nina Mouzone rushed for 121 yards and three rushing touchdowns. The Burn defense crushed the Illusion, only allowing a total of 78 offensive yards, consisting of 57 on the rush, 21 passing yards, and four interceptions from four different defensive backs.
The Burn (3-1) will travel to face the Columbus Flames (2-2) this Saturday, at 7:00 pm as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.
