(DANVILLE, IL) - CJ Burdick, a freshman right-hander from University of San Diego, threw a no-hitter for the Danville Dans against the Springfield Sliders in a 6-0 game Wednesday night at Danville Stadium.

Burdick just missed a perfect game by giving up a walk to the Sliders Nick Riotto leading off the fourth inning. He struck out 10 batters in his 103 pitch no-no.

The Dans defense contributed to the effort, committing no errors for the first time this season. In the fifth inning, third-baseman Tyler Selesky (Florida Gulf Coast University) made a back-handed stop on a hard-hit shot and threw out Greg Basalyga at first for the third out. Then Dans left-fielder Ronnie Jebavy (Columbia State Community College) made a sliding catch of a ball hit by Drew Harper to make the second out in the sixth.

Burdick said he started thinking about it being a no-hitter in the fourth inning. "But by the sixth, I was definitely aware that this was a possibility." This was the righty's first no-hitter. He has thrown a one-hitter in his career - "the lead-off batter got that hit," Burdick added.

In his freshman season, Burdick started four games and made 21 appearances for the Toreros. He earned a 2-2 record with a 2.58 ERA, giving up 11 earned runs while striking out 28 and walking 22 batters.

This is the fifth no-hitter in Danville Dans history, and the third Dans no-hitter in Danville Stadium. Brian Wiese threw a 9-inning no-no against the Springfield Rifles on July 27, 1996. Kurt Ainsworth tossed a 7-inning no-hitter against the Quincy Gems on June 18, 1997. A Dans 6-inning combined no-hitter was tossed on the road by Nick DeCampli and Ty Davis in a 2-1 loss to the Rifles. A 7-inning no-hitter was also thrown by Mike Weel against the Decatur Blues on June 14, 1999.

Danville Dans are in their 27th season and are a member of the Prospect League, one of the premier college summer leagues in the nation. Baseball players from California, Florida, and all across the Midwest are in Danville to improve their fielding skills and batting with wood bats. With this dedication, it is no wonder that some players advance to the major leagues, including 23 former Dans players.

The Dans take on the Sliders Thursday night in Springfield, and return to Danville Stadium for home games Friday (vs Terre Haute) and Saturday (against Lorain County Ironmen). Game time is 6:30 pm at historic Danville Stadium.
