Bucks Sign First Player, Canadian College Goalie Joins Team

LAREDO, Texas - On Tuesday the 2006 CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks announced the signing of goalie Jay Ewasiuk (e-wazz-e-uk). Ewasiuk, who played this past season at the University of Windsor, is the first player signed by the Bucks this off season. Ewasiuk, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, spent three seasons at the University of Windsor. This past season he posted the second best save percentage in all of Canadian college hockey in the CIS at .932, and the sixth best goals allowed average in the CIS at 2.24.
"Jay had a great save percentage in college, which is something that I really put a lot of emphasis on," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "We are expecting to lose both goalies from last year with Lemanowicz going overseas and Grumet-Morris most likely to advance to the AHL. Ewasiuk gives us a great building block for our 2006-07 season."
Ewasiuk spent parts of three seasons playing major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League playing for Moose Jaw and Tri-City from 1996-1999. He then played for his father at Grant MacEwan College in Alberta for two years before spending the last three seasons at the University of Windsor.
"I am extremely happy to sign with the Bucks," said Ewasiuk. "I had other offers, but when Laredo wanted to sign me there was no question about where I was going. The Bucks are a very good organization, evidenced by their winning the CHL championship two of the last three years. I am looking forward to a good year."
Ewasiuk, 6'0" 200 pounds, leaves the University of Windsor as the schools all-time leader in goals allowed average. In addition Ewasiuk had a save percentage over 90 all three years with the Lancers.
His father Terry was a 7th round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1973.
