Laredo Bucks News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - The Laredo Bucks snapped a season high four game winless streak with a 5-3 victory over the Austin Ice Bats in front of 3,724 fans at the Bat Cave in Austin on Sunday night. Forward Chris Grenville scored a pair of goals as the Bucks, who had lost three straight in shootouts, picked up a point for the fourth straight game. Laredo is 32-12-6 with a Southeast Division and Southern Conference best 70 points. Laredo is home this Friday as they host the Corpus Christi Rayz. Face off set for 7:30 p.m. For more information on 2005-06 Bucks single game or season tickets call the Bucks office at (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com.
The Bucks struck early in the first for a pair of goals. At 4:30 of the first forward Jeff Bes sent a cross ice pass to the left circle where defenseman Adam Rivet cut to the bottom of the circle and then scored with a short side wrist shot low to the glove side for his 13th of the year. Just 1:19 later it was forward Chris Grenville extending the lead to 2-0 as he blasted a slap shot as he skated down the left wing for his team leading 22nd. The Ice Bats got back in the game when forward John McNabb got loose on a breakaway and scored at 16:48. Laredo dominated the chances in the first, out shooting the Ice Bats 20-10.
In the second period the Bucks continued to dominate the chances as they out shot Austin 14-5. Despite the Bucks dominating the opportunities it was Austin who tied the game. Forward Dan Carney dumped the puck in from center ice where it took a crazy hop and it snuck by Bucks goalie Dov Grumet-Morris off his stick into the net at 17:34.
The Bucks took the lead in the third period as Grenville fanned on a shot from the left circle, but forward James Hiebert was there to stuff in the loose puck at 6:16 to make it 3-2 Laredo. It was the 17th of the season for Hiebert. Just under two minutes later the Bucks added to their lead as Grenville got loose on a breakaway and scored with a wrist shot top shelf high glove side for his second of the game and a 4-2 Laredo lead. Austin got back in the game as McNabb scored his second of the night, this one on a power play rebound at 11:10. Late in the game Austin went on a power play chance and pulled the goalie for a six-on-four advantage as they looked to tie the game. The Bucks sealed the win when Cullaton scored his 14th of the season into the empty net at 18:53. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Austin 3.
Grumet-Morris stopped 23 of 26 shots and got the win to improve to 12-4-2. Miguel Beaudry, the starting goalie for Austin, lasted just 5:41 and allowed two goals on eight shots. Matt Barnes took the loss in relief, allowing two goals on 34 shots and fell to 8-13-3. Laredo was 0-4 on the power play, while Austin was 1-8. The Bucks out shot Austin 43-26.
