
Bucks Beat Bats 4-3, Laredo Wins Sixth Straight

LAREDO, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks dominated early, and then rallied for a 4-3 victory over the visiting Austin Ice Bats at the LEC on Sunday night in front of 5,113 fans. Defenseman Adam Rivet potted the game winning goal in the third period to give Laredo the win. The Bucks fired a season high 27 first period shots and totaled 51 on the night as they won their sixth straight. Overall Laredo improved their Southern Conference best record to 34-13-5 with 73 points, and they lead Corpus Christi by eleven points with one game in hand in the Southeast Division race. Laredo is home on Friday against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in a 7:30 p.m. face off. The first 2,000 fans get a Bucks mouse pad courtesy of Doctors Hospital. Laredo absolutely dominated the open minutes of play getting several good chances, but failing to capitalize against Austin goalie Miguel Beaudry. Finally the Bucks broke thru when defenseman Adam Rivet centered to defenseman Serge Dube who spun home a backhander at 6:58 for his 12th of the year. Laredo continued to control the flow of play, but Austin tied it on a wrist shot by forward Chris Murphy at 8:35. The Bucks retook the lead on a power play chance late in the frame as defenseman Oriel McHugh teed up a big drive from the point that was tipped top shelf by forward Igor Pohanka at 15:41. It was the third straight game with a goal for Pohanka and his fourth of the season. Laredo out shot Austin 27-5 in the first period, but Beaudry made a CHL season high 25 saves in the period to keep his team in the game.
The Ice Bats regrouped in the second period and quickly drew even as defenseman Terry Virtue scored on a wrister 44 seconds into the frame to tie it at 2-2. Then forward Aaron Davis tipped in a shot for a power play tally at 5:23 for a 3-2 Austin lead. The Bucks came back to tie the game at 3-3 on a man advantage try of their own as forward Leo Thomas jammed in a rebound at 7:03. It was his 19th of the season and he has scored in four of the last five games.
In the third period the Bucks grabbed the lead back. Forward Jeff Bes spun out of the right corner and sent a backdoor pass to Rivet who scooped it into the open net at 9:36 for a 4-3 lead. It was his 18th of the year, tying him for the CHL lead among defenseman. The Bucks held on down the stretch to seal the win. FINAL SCORE Laredo 4, Austin 3.
Kevin Reiter stopped 26 of 29 shots and got the win to improve to 12-5-1. Beaudry made 47 terrific saves on 51 shots, but took the loss to fall to 12-8-8. The Bucks were 2-4 on the power play while Austin went 1-7. Laredo out shot the Ice Bats 51-29.
