WHL Western Hockey League

Bruins expansion draft set

May 31, 2006 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, Alberta -- The Western Hockey League has announced plans for Friday's expansion draft, to be held in order to stock the roster for the League's newest member club, the Chilliwack Bruins, for the 2006-07 campaign.

The Bruins will be able to select one player from Brandon's 50-player protected list.

WHL clubs will be allowed to protect only fifteen players - aged 17 to 20 - or sixteen players if that list includes three overagers. All 2005 and 2006 bantam draft picks are exempt from this week's draft.

Results of the draft will be announced and posted on the WHL website at www.whl.ca on Friday night.

The Bruins will begin play this September.

In a related story, Chilliwack's new WHL franchise has confirmed that Jim Hiller will serve as that club's first ever head coach.

Hiller was head coach of his hometown Alberni Valley Bulldogs during the past two seasons, posting a record of 75-33-12. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach with the Tri-City Americans.

The Bruins will be partially owned by Anaheim Mighty Ducks' general manager Brian Burke and New York Rangers' GM Glen Sather.
