Brown And Peralta Win Weekly Awards
Published on July 9, 2012 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Andrew Brown of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and Wily Peralta of the Nashville Sounds were the best of the best last week as they put together the top performances in the Pacific Coast League from July 2nd to 8th, and today the league office recognized their efforts by naming them the Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively.
After winning the award just two weeks ago, Brown has not slowed down at the plate at all. The Colorado Springs outfielder smashed six home runs in seven games last week, easily the most in the league, while batting .452 and adding 12 RBI. Brown had 14 hits on the week and at least one in every game, most notably a 5-for-5 night on the 4th of July in Reno which included two home runs, five RBI, and four runs scored, as the Sky Sox routed the Aces 19-4.
Born in Dallas, Texas, Brown was drafted in the 18th round of the 2007 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He batted .284 with 20 home runs for Memphis in 2011, and made his Major League debut on June 12th. Two days later he got his first hit, an RBI single off of Yunesky Maya of the Washington Nationals. In October, he was claimed off of waivers by the Colorado Rockies, and in 2012, he is batting .310 with 18 home runs and 79 RBI for the Sky Sox.
Peralta put together a pair of great outings for the Sounds last week, collecting victories against Iowa and Memphis. On Monday in Nashville, the right-hander shut out the Cubs over seven innings, allowing just five hits and no walks while striking out six. He followed that up on Saturday with 5.2 strong innings on the road, striking out six Redbirds while allowing just an unearned run and one walk. His superb control numbers resulted in a 0.95 WHIP, while his perfect 0.00 ERA was more than enough for the Sounds to win both of his starts.
Born in Samana, Dominican Republic, Peralta was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2006 as a free agent. In 2011 he went 11-7 with a 3.17 ERA between AA and AAA, and on April 22nd, 2012, he made his Major League debut, pitching one inning against the Colorado Rockies while notching his first strikeout. This season Peralta is 5-8 for Nashville, striking out 79 batters in 90.0 innings.
