Broadway\'s Blast Off Scoreboard Sends Gnats To 7-1 Victory

SAVANNAH, GA â The Savannah Sand Gnats (12-13) won their fourth game in a row beating the Asheville Tourists (8-19) tonight 7-1 at Historic Grayson Stadium. First baseman Larry Broadway was 3 for 4 on the night with a double, two runs scored, and blasted a two run home run off the Budweiser scoreboard in center field, his second homer in as many nights.
The Sand Gnats got on the board first in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by left fielder Chad Chop. The Tourists then tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Oscar Materano.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Sand Gnat designated hitter Marco Yepez singled to left field and stole second base. Broadway then crushed his sixth homer of the season giving him a share of the lead in home runs in the South Atlantic League. The Sand Gnats would tack on four more runs in the bottom of the seventh highlighted by a bases clearing triple by Chop giving him four RBI on the night.
Sand Gnat starter Jason Bergmann (2-2) picked up the win pitching six innings only allowing a run and struck out three. Tom Mitchell earned his first save of the season pitching three scoreless innings and did not allow a hit. Tourists' starter Ben Crockett (1-5) took the loss.
The Sand Gnats will play the Tourists in the final game of a three game series tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. The first 1,000 guests through the gates will receive a Sand Gnats t-shirt courtesy of Kiss 97.3 FM, 1290 WTKS, Derst Baking Company, Boar's Head, Papa Johns, and GSTEP. Cinco De Mayo weekend will continue tomorrow evening with an assortment of food and beverage specials. Tomorrow is also Georgia Lottery Mega Millions Friday, and if a Sand Gnat player hits a home run some lucky guest will be a winner in the Amtrak Home Run Giant Trip Giveaway.
