ADDITIONAL SCHEDULING NOTES
The Brigade open the season playing their first three - and four of their first five - games at home in Royal Farms Arena. Baltimore is the only team to open the season with a homestand longer than two games. Baltimore will play five Saturday games (one home, four away), three Friday games (all at home), two Sunday games (one home, one away) and one Thursday game (away). Baltimore will have a bye week in Week 11 (July 5-7), along with Albany, Columbus and Washington. The Brigade take on Atlantic City and Columbus - both new to the AFL in 2019 - and Washington three times each, Philadelphia twice and Albany once. The Brigade play their final home game of the season on Saturday, July 13 against the Washington Valor. Baltimore closes out the 2019 regular season in Atlantic City on Sunday, July 21.
The playoffs will follow the same format as they did in 2018, with the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs. There will be a pair of home-and-home series between the opponents in the first round of the playoffs. Teams will advance to ArenaBowl XXXII based on the aggregate score of the two games played. Unlike the first round of the playoffs, ArenaBowl XXXII will be a traditional single game and will take place on the second weekend of August.
The AFL also announced the following rule changes intended to increase of the speed of the game:
The first-half's one-minute timing rules will be eliminated. There will be no automatic clock stoppage at the one-minute mark in the second quarter and the game clock will follow regular guidelines. Additionally, in the fourth quarter, the traditional AFL clock stoppage rules will not take effect until the 30-second mark. The number and duration of media timeouts will be reduced. Coaches will have their traditional three timeouts to use per half. Two of the three timeouts will be clock-stoppage timeouts only: the game clock will stop, and the play clock will reset immediately. One of the three timeouts per half will remain as a traditional media timeout. A 60-second play clock will be implemented following the extra-point attempt and/or two-point conversion attempt with the exception of media timeouts.
