Newark, NJ âSaturday, June 29, 2002 â The Newark Bears dropped the series finale with the Bridgeport Bluefish by a score of 6-0 as Alan Mahaffey (9-1) went the full nine innings and allowed just three hits. Despite the loss, Newark will still head to Somerset tomorrow with at least a one game lead in the South Division.
Mark Leiter (7-4) lasted 7.1 innings, but surrendered six runs, five earned on eight hits and one walk, as his defense also committed three errors to put him on the losing end of the ball game. Jimmy Hurst, 2-for-3, and Wes Chamberlain, 1-for-4, were the only Bears to put a hit up on the scoreboard.
Rolo Avila was 2-for-5, with a HR, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, and Jose Amado was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI to help Bridgeport pick up the 6-0 win.
The Bears will begin a three game series with the Patriots tomorrow in Somerset, and will return home next Wednesday to begin a six game home stand with the Pennsylvania Road Warriors and the Nashua Pride.
