Brian Cushing named AFL High School Ironman of the Year

NEW YORK – The Arena Football League has awarded BRIAN CUSHING of Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, N.J. the 2005 AFL High School Ironman of the Year. AFL Commissioner DAVID BAKER presented the award during the U.S. Army All-American Awards Dinner held on Friday evening.

The AFL High School Ironman of the Year Award is given annually to the top two-way high school player in the nation.

Cushing (6-3, 220) was an All-State, All-North Jersey and All-TriState selection. In true Ironman style, "Cush" recorded 120 tackles, 9.5 sacks and seven interceptions on defense and 13 receptions for 456 yards and seven touchdowns on offense. As a junior, Cushing was named First-Team All-State and Bergen County Defensive Player of the Year. Cushing is a member of the National Top 100 and the East Top 100.

"I am very honored to accept the AFL High School Ironman of the Year Award," Cushing said. "It was a great honor to stand with all the nominees and tonight just shows that all the hard work has paid off."

Cushing has not made a college commitment announcement yet, but Florida, Miami, Notre Dame, and USC are among top choices.

Kickoff for the fifth annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which showcases the nation's top high school football talent in a classic East vs. West match-up, is set for today 1 p.m. ET at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas live on NBC.
