Recap
Laguna Beach resident Lindsay Davenport won two of three sets in her return to professional tennis in Orange County with the St. Louis Aces in a 16-14 defeat to the Newport Beach Breakers. The Breakers (4-4) ended a two-match losing streak as their singles player, Lester Cook, rallied Newport Beach from a 14-11 deficit heading into the final set with a 5-0 victory over Andrei Pavel.
The Breakers won their men's and women's doubles sets by identical 5-2 scores before Davenport teamed with Pavel to win in mixed doubles, 5-1. Davenport then showcased the crisp groundstrokes she used to win 55 WTA Tour singles titles, three Grand Slam singles championships and a 1996 Olympic Gold Medal in blanking Marie-Eve Pelletier 5-0, providing St. Louis (4-4) with its first lead in the match.
The Breakers begin a three-match road trip over four days tomorrow at the Kansas City Explorers before returning to the Tennis Club Newport Beach on Tuesday, July 20 against Kansas City. The Breakers will feature former World No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam singles champion Maria Sharapova on Tuesday. This will be the sixth season in which Manhattan Beach resident Sharapova has played for the Breakers.
Tickets and team information for the Breakers' final three home matches next week can be found at www.NewportBeachBreakers.com or through the ticket sales office at 714-352-6301. General admission tickets for Tuesday's match featuring Sharapova are $45.
