Breakers Fall in Season Debut
July 3, 2009 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Orange County Breakers News Release
Reigning World TeamTennis Male MVP Ramon Delgado rallied the Newport Beach Breakers to 21-20 Supertiebreaker victory over the Washington Kastles on Opening Night of the Advanta World TeamTennis Pro League before a sellout crowd of 2,000 at Breakers Stadium at Newport Beach Country Club.
The Breakers trailed 18-13 going into the final set of the night - men's singles. Delgado won his set, 5-2 over Scott Oudsema, evened the match in overtime by breaking Oudsema's serve, then holding his own serve, and pulled out a 7-5 Supertiebreaker victory.
The Breakers began with an inauspicious start to their 2009 season as they lost their first three sets and faced a 15-8 deficit. However, Julie Ditty, the USTA Pro Circuit's winningest player of all time with 35 titles (26 in doubles), and Canadian Fed Cup veteran Marie-Eve Pelletier displayed the necessary grit in setting the stage for Delgado with a clean, hard-fought 5-3 doubles victory over Washington's Olga Puchkova and Lindsey Nelson.
Washington played its season opener without its two big guns, Rennae Stubbs and Leander Paes as the doubles specialists are still alive in their respective draws at Wimbledon. Two-time WTT champion Stubbs, the 2008 WTT Female MVP and WTT Finals MVP, and six-time Grand Slam doubles champion, has advanced to the women's doubles semifinals at Wimbledon. 2009 French Open men's doubles champion Paes is awaiting his mixed doubles semifinal at the All England Club.
The Kastles employed Villa Park native and USC graduate Lindsey Nelson and Marina del Rey resident Lester Cook as substitutes for Thursday's match.
