Breakers defeat Smash to claim King Cup

NEW YORK (August 28, 2004) - The Newport Beach Breakers continued their surprising run at the 2004 WTT Finals, capturing the team's first King Trophy and World TeamTennis Championship with a 23-17 victory over the Delaware Smash in the WTT Finals Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center.

The Breakers, who advanced into Saturday's final with a stunning 20-12 defeat of the five-time WTT champions Sacramento Capitals in Friday's Western Conference semifinal, won four of five matches. Ramon Delgado, who was named as the WTT Finals MVP, closed out with victory with a decisive 5-1 singles win over Delaware's Rajeev Ram.

David Wheaton together with doubles stand out Liezel Huber (DEL) defeated Ellis Ferreira and Nana Miyagi (NB) 5-3, for the mixed doubles opening event. Newport Beach came back with a vengeance in women's doubles with Aniko Kapros and Nana Miyagi. Kapros' consistency and Miyagi's net experience led the Newport Beach duo to a 5-4 win over Samantha Reeves and Huber. Delgado and Ferreira (NB) used their strong net play to defeat Wheaton and Rajeev Ram (DEL), 5-4. In women's singles, Kapros ran Reeves from side to side for a 5-3 win to set the stage for the final set of men's singles. Delgado (NB) dominated Ram for a quick 5-1 win to give the Breakers the WTT title in only their second year in the WTT Pro League.

Mixed Doubles: David Wheaton/Liezel Huber (DEL) def. Ellis Ferreira / Nana Miyagi (NB), 5-3

Women's Doubles: Aniko Kapros / Nana Miyagi (NB) def. Liezel Huber/Samantha Reeves (DEL), 5-4

Men's Doubles: Ellis Ferreira/Ramon Delgado (NB) def. David Wheaton/Rajeev Ram (DEL), 5-4

Women's Singles: Aniko Kapros (NB) def. Samantha Reeves (DEL), 5-3

Men's Singles: Ramon Delgado (NB) def. Rajeev Ram (EL), 5-1

Billie Jean King and Larry King originated World TeamTennis and its unique gender-equity team concept in the early 70s. The format used for a WTT Pro League match features teams comprised of two men, two women and a coach.
