
Bowers Named Defender of the Year

(Westport, Conn., May 2, 2002) â Sean Bowers of the Baltimore Blast has been named the 2001-02 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Defender of the Year, the League announced on Thursday. Bowers was selected through a voting process involving MISL team management as well as a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters from each of the League's host cities.
Voters were asked to list three MISL defenders. A first-place ballot was worth five points, a second-place selection was worth three points, and a third-place vote was worth one point.
Bowers, 32, is a three-time recipient of the award, claiming the League honor in 1992-93 and 1993-94 while playing for the Detroit Rockers.
The San Diego native received 79 points and 13 first-place votes. Philadelphia's Pat Morris finished second in voting with 37 points and three first-place votes while Milwaukee's Troy Dusosky placed third with 36 points and five first-place votes.
Bowers appeared in each of Baltimore's 44 regular season outings during the 2001-02 campaign and registered 14 3-point goals, 17 2-point scores, and 17 assists for 93 points. The Quincy University product finished the season ranked second among MISL defenders and 12th overall in League scoring.
The eight-year veteran led the MISL in restart goals with 15 while ranking fourth in 3-point goals. Bowers also paced the League and established a Baltimore single-season record with 94 blocks during the campaign.
The four-time All-League selection enjoyed a pair of milestones during the 2001-02 season as well. He became just the second player in League history to record at least 600 career points and 600 career blocks with a four-block performance vs. Philadelphia on November 17. Bowers then became just the 29th player in League history to record 700 career points when he notched a 3-point goal in Baltimore's 20-10 victory over the Kixx on January 6.
Long considered one of the sport's finest two-way players, Bowers has posted 50 3-point goals, 189 2-point scores, 35 1-point tallies, 192 assists, 761 points, and 677 blocks in 255 career games played. The 1991-92 National Professional Soccer League Rookie of the Year ranks seventh on the League's all-time blocks list while holding the record for the most combined points and blocks in a season after posting 148 points and 172 blocks (320 total) during the 1994-95 campaign.
