Boston United Eagles To Play This Season
Published on July 10, 2007 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Boston, MA. ABA basketball is slated to return to the City of Boston in 2007-2008 - but this time not just in name alone. According to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "A new ownership group has finalized a deal to acquire the rights to the City of Boston from the owners of the Cape Cod Frenzy, and they intend for the team to play their home games in metropolitan Boston this season. And it is a very good, very experienced group of people doing it.
The Boston United Eagles will be headed by Eggie McRae, Scoonie Penn and Randell Jackson under Global Basketball LLC. A previous Boston ABA team, the Boston Frenzy, met with limited success in its first two years of existence and never actually played a home game in Boston itself. Instead, the team played at UMass-Dartmouth and in southeastern Massachusetts.
"That was one of the reasons we moved the Frenzy to Cape Code," explained Cape Cod Frenzy GM Ian McCarthy. "We felt the team needed to be a part of the community to be successful."
Winford "Eggie" McRae is a former UTEP star guard; Randell Jackson is the former Boston Frenzy head coach and former NBA player with the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards; Scoonie Penn is a former star point guard at Boston College and Ohio State and a second round draft pick of the Atlanta Hawks in 2000.
The group has a rich history connected to Boston Basketball. The four met each other through BABC (Boston Amateur Basketball Club), Boston's AAU organization known nationally for hosting the prestigious Boston Shootout.
President of the organization will be Carmelo Tavieso, a former UMASS-Amherst star and product of Dorchester and Thayer Academy. Eggie McRae will be co-GM and Associate Head Coac. Manu Sharma will be co-GM and Head Coach.
"We are extremely excited about giving back to the community that we love and have played in for over 15 years," said McRae. "With this ownership group in place, we now have relationships all over the city, country and world to involve the right players and people to have a championship team come back to Boston." Complete details about the team will be posted shortly. For now, email team1metro@yahoo.com or visit www.abalive.com or www.bostonunitedbasketball.net.
