Boston Cannons Defeat New York Lizards, 16-12

June 21, 2013 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Boston Cannons News Release

Allston, MA - Four Cannons players had five points as Boston took care of the New York Lizards, 16-12, in their return to Harvard Stadium in front of 8,526 fans. Matt Poskay scored five goals for the first time this season, earning him Player of the Game honors, while the team exploded for a season-high 16 points. Paul Rabil (4 goals, 1 assist), Kevin Buchanan (2, 3) and rookie Will Manny (1, 4) each added five points as the Cannons improved to 3-5 on the season.

In the first quarter, the Cannons got off to a slow start, falling behind 4-1 just five minutes in. But Boston would close out the quarter on a strong note with scores from Mike Stone and Buchanan to accompany rookie Cam Flint's early goal. The Cannons brought the deficit to within one at the end of the first, trailing 4-3.

Starting at the end of the first quarter and continuing into the second, the Cannons went on a five-goal run, including two apiece from Rabil and Poskay, who scored two consecutive power play goals. Boston was 3-3 on the power play, while New York went 0-4. Jordan Burke and the Cannons' defense only let one Rob Pannell shot hit the back of the net during the second.

The third quarter saw a Cannons team who doubled up on New York's three goals in the frame by scoring six of their own. Buchanan and Flint each tallied their second goal of the night, while Manny recorded his first goal and third assist. Poskay added two more to his total and Scott Ratliff scored his first career goal. Max Seibald connected on a two-pointer before the end of the quarter, bringing the Lizards to within five at 13-8.

Scoring evened out in the final quarter, but the Cannons remained in control. Rabil notched his fourth of the night and Poskay got his fifth off of Manny's fourth assist. With five-point efforts from New York's Pannell and Seibald, the Lizards remained within striking distance, but could never close the gap as they fell to 3-5 on the season.

Burke was active in net, ending the evening with 16 saves, while Chris Eck won the face-off battle (57%) against New York's league-leading Greg Gurenlian.

The Cannons next travel to Ohio to face the Machine on Saturday, June 29 (7:30pm).
