The Cannons, who won the franchise's first title in 2011, will look to defend the Steinfeld Trophy in front of their home crowd at Championship Weekend. Four of the league's eight teams will qualify, with two semi-final games played Saturday and the Championship Game taking place Sunday. All three games are included in Cannons season ticket packages and will be broadcast live nationally.
"Following our first championship win, we couldn't be happier to host the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend, giving us the opportunity to repeat in front of our home crowd, the best fans in Major League Lacrosse," said Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney. "With two new teams in the league, it's only going to get tougher to make the post-season, so every regular season game will be a battle and a great show for our fans."
Despite the expansion draft in December to fill the rosters of the new Ohio Machine and Charlotte Hounds, first-year Cannons head coach Steve Duffy will lead a solid core of returning players on the field this season. 2011 MLL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year Paul Rabil returns to power the midfield, while co-captains Matt Poksay (2010 MLL MVP) and Mitch Belisle (Cannons 2011 Defensive Player of the Year) will lead the attack and defense, respectively. 2011 Championship Weekend MVP Jordan Burke returns as the Cannons' starting goalie.
The April 28 home opener against the Rochester Rattlers will feature a pre-game Championship celebration ceremony. Additional special events around home games will be announced closer to the beginning of the season.
"As always, we will create events to involve the greater Boston community in Cannons games, bringing new and fun experiences for our fans," continued Barney. "We also added a Thursday night game to the schedule this year to draw Boston's young professionals for an affordable, after-work event."
Cannons season ticket packages are on sale now starting at $115, including seven Cannons home games plus the three games of Championship Weekend. Individual game tickets and Championship Weekend packages will go on sale at a later date.
