Boris Becker sidelined for rest of WTT season with injury

July 13, 2005 - World TeamTennis (WTT) News Release

NEW YORK (July 13, 2005) - Boris Becker, a three-time Wimbledon champion, has withdrawn from WTT due to a knee injury. Becker will miss his scheduled matches on Thursday, July 14, at New York (Sportimes), Friday, July 15, at home versus Houston (Wranglers), Sunday, July 17, at Sacramento (Capitals) and Monday, July 18, at Houston (Wranglers).

Substituting for the injured Becker will be former world top 10, Mark Philippoussis. The right- handed Australian has captured 10 singles titles and three doubles titles while posting a 300-189 singles record. Philippoussis' team tennis experience includes a 1999 ATP Tour World Team Championship title.

Philippoussis will substitute for Becker on Thursday, July 14, at New York (Sportimes) and the following night, July 15, as the Hartford FoxForce host the Houston Wranglers at Apple Arena in Avon, Conn.

Although Becker will be absent from the FoxForce roster, fans will get a special treat as Martina Hingis will play Thursday July 14, when the New York Sportimes (6-0) host the Hartford FoxForce (4-1). Hingis is expected to take the court with John McEnroe for a set of mixed doubles.

Hingis' final match of the season will be at the Westside Tennis Club in Houston on Saturday, July 16, as she leads her undefeated New York Sportimes against the 0-6 Wranglers.

Sportimes owner Claude Okin is thrilled to have Hingis for an additional match. "She is a real team player and is a big part of our success in the record standings." When asked why Hingis decided to add an additional match Okin noted that, "she loves the team and wants to compete for New York and all the Sportimes fans...We are thrilled to have Martina and we are excited to put her out in front of the great fans in New York one more time."

Hingis tops the league player standings in doubles with teammates Jenny Hopkins (.781 win percentage) and also in mixed doubles with Mark Merklein (.658). Hingis is near the top in women's singles with a 23-7 game record and a .767 win percentage.
