Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release

(Cincinnati, OH) – The Cincinnati Riverhawks (5-6-0, 15 points) beat the Indiana Blast (1-9-1, 4 points) last Friday night to clinch at least a share of the inaugural Border Battle Cup.

The Riverhawks supplied most of the attacking in the first half, out shooting the Blast 9-1. Cincinnati had 4-5 great opportunities to score within the first 20 minutes, but we unable to put the ball in the net. Indiana was not able to put together any kind of sustained attack, relying mostly on counterattacks to move the ball forward. The first half ended with no score for both teams.

The second half started with both teams attacking strong. Cincinnati was able to strike first though. Midfielder Chris Doré scored his second goal of the season in the 56th minute after almost scoring in just about every game. Doré scored when Indiana was called for a foul 3 yards outside the top of the penalty area. Despite setting up a wall of 5 players, Indiana was unable to stop Doré's kick which bent around the wall and into the upper right 90 of the net, past keeper Josh Lynk.

Indiana almost tied the game in the 61st minute when forward Jamar Beasley's shot off a counterattack went just wide of the goal.

Cincinnati continued to pressure the Blast and was rewarded with a second goal in the 84th minute of play.

Defender Nick Glaser played a beautiful long ball to Forward Byron Carmichael, who was next to a couple of Indiana defenders. Carmichael settled the ball, beat the defenders, and blasted a shot past Lynk for his team leading 4th goal of the season.

Indiana prevented the clean sheet in the 89th minute on a goal from Jeff Dresser. Dresser took a shot from roughly 23 yards out which went through a crowd of players. Keeper Eric Pattison, back in goal for the first time since his ankle injury, wasn't able to see the ball clearly, thus was not able to get a hand on the ball.

"It was a good game," said Coach Nick Ranieri afterwards. "We deserved the win. We had some good training coming in and the players had an attitude like they were going to win. They also were able to adjust well to a new formation which they had just learned."

Cincinnati is currently in third place in the Central Division with 15 points. The Riverhawks can win the inaugural Border Battle Cup this Friday with a tie when they play the Blast again in Indiana. This game will be televised on Fox Sports World. The Riverhawks and the Blast play for a third time in a week when Indiana returns to Cincinnati on Saturday.

As an A-League premier team and part of the United Soccer Leagues, the Cincinnati Riverhawks enter its sixth season in 2003. For tickets and general team information call (513) 326-GOAL or visit www.riverhawks.com.
