Bombers Use "Poma Power" to Defeat West Virginia 7-4

July 15, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

The Dubois County Bombers returned from the All-Star break Thursday night to take on the Eastern Division's first-half champion West Virginia Miners. After trailing early, the Bombers bats came alive and led them to a 7-4 victory.

Tomas Rodriguez, one of four Bomber All-Stars, got his sixth start of the season. He was effective but wild, giving up just four hits and walking five Miners in his four innings of work. With the nine base-runners he allowed, only one of them scored as Tomas was able to apply a "bend-but-don't-break" approach to work his way out of jams.

Ryan Billo relieved Rodriguez in the fifth, and threw three solid innings of his own Friday night. In his outing, Billo gave up just one hit and received his second win of the season.

Offensively, the Bombers were potent when they needed to be, knocking eight hits and putting up seven runs. Center fielder Danny Poma, fresh off his triple in the All-Star game, stayed hot and went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Poma finished a homerun shy of the cycle and added a pair of walks as he reached base in all five plate appearances.

Poma's Hofstra University teammate, T.J. Thomas, also drove in a couple of runs as he went 2-for-3 with a monstrous double that plated two in the bottom of the eighth inning. First baseman Jamie Skagerlind and left fielder Anthony Aceto also drove in one run apiece.

Marist College reliever Jake Rifkin closed the game down in the ninth for his team-leading fifth save of the season. Rifkin did give up one run, but struck out two batters to thwart West Virginia's comeback attempt. The Bombers are now up to 4-4 during the second half, and West Virginia falls to 4-4.

These two teams will finish up a two-game set Saturday evening at League Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:15 pm EDT, as the Bombers looks to continue their climb to the top of the standings!
