Bombers Subdued 5-2 by Danville Before 4th of July Crowd of More Than 1,000

July 4, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

Monday night League Stadium was host to an exciting game in front of an intense crowd of over 1,000. The Dubois County Bombers put in a valiant effort, but the Danville Dans' pitching halted that effort, defeating them 5-2.

Indiana State University Sophomore Sean Manaea got his fifth start of the season, but he didn't have his best stuff on the holiday. He threw six innings, giving up three earned runs, and striking out three. Manaea allowed seven base-runners in the losing effort, which takes his record to 1-2 this season.

Danville took the lead early, and had a 3-0 advantage following an RBI groundout by left fielder Andrew Vallejo in the fourth inning. Dubois County got on the board in the bottom of the inning after right fielder T.J. Thomas poked an outside pitch over the right side of the infield, scoring Joe Perez. Just three pitches earlier, Thomas crushed a no-doubter over the left field wall, but the homerun was declared foul by home plate umpire Mark Leach.

After Danville added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning, the margin was four. However, the Bombers are a "never-say-die" team and have fought back late in games many times this season. Monday this happened yet again, as Kolin Conner started the inning off a single and T.J. Thomas followed with a walk. Brian Norwood, who went 4-for-5 on Sunday, then singled into left field to load the bases with no one out. Second baseman Nick Stoia was the next man up, and he hit a soft grounder to the right of the pitcher that scored a run, but Stoia was thrown out at first. Danville's Michael Swanner then struck out Aric Marquardt and Grant Zawadzki in succession to end the game with Danville on top, 5-2.

At the Prospect League's halfway point, the standings recede and every team's record returns to 0-0. After tonight, Danville starts out 1-0 and the Bombers drop to 0-1.

Following the game was a vivid fireworks display put on by SkyMagic Pyrotechnics. The bursts and illuminations lit up the sky for over 15 minutes as the crowd cheered and was in awe. Despite the Bombers' loss, the crowd left with two great shows and smiles on their faces.

Dubois County leaves for a four game road trip on Wednesday at DeKalb County and Danville. The next home game at League Stadium will be on Sunday, July 10th as the Bombers will be taking on the Nashville Outlaws. It will be Family Sunday at the ballpark, as families of three or more will receive $1 off of each ticket at the gate. In addition, immediate families of any size will not have to pay more than $20.00 to get into the game! Sunday will be Native American Cultural Enrichment Night at League Stadium and the game will begin at 6:15 pm EDT. Gates will open for fans beginning at 5:05 pm!
