Bombers Ride 3-Game Winning Streak, Outlast Richmond 2-1

June 12, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

The Dubois County Bombers continued their hot streak Sunday night in front of a crowd of 464 at League Stadium. The Richmond RiverRats came to town for their first meeting with the Bombers, and it did not disappoint. It was tight the whole way, with Dubois County coming out on top by a score of 2-1.

Tomas Rodriguez (Mid-Continent University) started for the Bombers and threw five and 2/3 strong innings. He gave up just three hits and one run, which was unearned. Jordan Eich (Marist College) relieved Rodriguez in the sixth and pitched through the eighth inning, striking out two and allowing no runs. Eich picked up his first win of the season.

Offensively, the Bombers didn't get many chances, but when they did, they made them count. In the bottom of the third, center fielder Danny Poma (Hofstra University) laid into a fastball that carried over the left field wall and off of the manual scoreboard at League Stadium. It was the first homerun of the season at League Stadium. The Bombers would take the 1-0 lead into the six inning, when Richmond tied the game after an error by shortstop Grant Zawadzki (Cleveland State CC).

The momentum for Richmond would be short-lived. In the latter half of the seventh, Zawadzki would start his redemption. After Nick Stoia (Franklin College) started the inning with a fly out, the speedy Zawadzki reached on an infield single. After Kirby Campbell (Ball State) struck out and Zawadzki reached third on a two-base error, Danny Poma singled to give the Bombers the lead again.

Dubois County Manager Grant Bellak took just about everyone by surprise in the ninth inning when he elected to put Zawadzki on the mound instead of closer Jake Rifkin, who had the night off. Zawadzki continued to amaze fans at what he can do by throwing a perfect ninth inning on just eight pitches. The Cleveland State Community College player picked up his first save and the Bombers picked up the victory 2-1.

Both Dubois County and Richmond move to 6-4 on the season. Tomorrow's probable pitchers are: 1) for Dubois County - Ryan Billo, 2) for Richmond - Drew Mitrisin. The Bombers will hit the road Monday morning and head for Hannibal, MO to take on the Hannibal Cavemen. They will then take on the first place Quincy Gems on Tuesday and Wednesday at Quincy, IL.

On Thursday, the Bombers will return home to face the Terre Haute Rex, who are just 2-7 this season. It will be Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark, with 12oz draft Bud and Bud Light on sale for just $2.00. All 16oz bottles will be discounted to $3.00. The Bombers are proud to be welcoming the Dubois County Leadership Academy for their night at the game. Also at the game will be groups from Holiday World and Budweiser. Holiday World will be giving away tickets to lucky fans throughout the game. The Budweiser girls will also be at League Stadium, hosting games for the over-21 crowd. Don't miss all these great promotions Thursday night; the game starts at 7:15 pm!
