Dubois County Bombers News Release
In what can best be described as a team effort, the Dubois County Bombers knocked off the Hannibal Cavemen 5-2 at Samuel Clemens Field Thursday night in Hannibal, Miss.
Alex Britt earned the win for the Bombers in his first start this year, giving up one earned run on four hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven. David Jesch earned the save after shutting out the Cavemen over the final two and two-thirds innings.
"We had great pitching, solid defense and clutch hits when we needed them," Jesch said. "We just wanted to throw strikes and pitch to contact and let our defense do the work."
Designated hitter Dalton Rouleaux, right fielder Adam Guinn and center fielder Austin Nyman each had one RBI, and second baseman Bo Ausmus hit a triple and scored on a throwing error the same play to lead the Bombers offense.
Hannibal pitcher Tyler Stuerman and the Cavemen defense seemed determined to let the Bombers score early on, as he walked the first two batters of the game. A combination of walks, Bombers hits and Cavemen errors saw the Bombers put the leadoff man aboard in the first four innings and put at least one runner on in every inning except the sixth and the ninth.
Hannibal, however, wiggled out of each Bomber threat until the third, when Nyman reached base on an error by Cavemen second baseman Sam Hall, stole second and scored on a single by Rouleaux,
The Cavemen's poor defense hurt them in the fourth when, with Guinn having led off with a single and advanced to third after a wild pitch and a groundout and Kolin Conner aboard first after being hit by a pitch, first baseman Chris Tavares hit a sure 1-6-3 double play ball back to Stuerman.
Except there is no such thing as a sure double play ball.
Stuerman threw wide of shortstop J. Golden, who was covering second, Guinn scored, and Conner and Tavares were both safe. Conner would score on a single by Nyman after Hall committed another error on a grounder from Bombers left fielder Jeff Zahn, staking the Bombers to a 3-1 lead.
Stuerman would finish with six innings and three runs - one earned - given up.
Ausmus extended the Bombers lead to 4-1 in the seventh. On came Nick Smart from the Bombers bullpen, and he quickly loaded the bases with one out before Jesch came in to put out the fire, allowing only one run and keeping the game at 4-2.
The Bombers manufactured their fifth run with two outs in the top of the eighth to make it 5-2 and cruised for the final six outs for their third win in as many nights.
"Everyone played well together tonight," Jesch said.
The Bombers play in Hannibal again Friday night at 7:35 p.m. EST and head to Terre Haute Saturday before returning home Sunday to play those same Terre Haute Rex at 6:15 p.m.
