Bombers Lose 9-7 to Dekalb County on 10th Inning Homerun
June 27, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release
The Dubois County Bombers lost a heart-breaker Monday night against the DeKalb County Liners. The final score was 9-7, but the game was neck-and-neck throughout. The Bombers took a 6-5 lead into the ninth inning, but Jake Rifkin blew the save and gave up two runs. In the bottom of the ninth down 7-6, Dubois County fought back and tied the game to put it into extra innings, but a two-run homer by DeKalb County's Jacob Lueneburg in the tenth gave the Liners the win.
David Mueller (Webster Univ.) got the start for the Bombers and threw six decent innings. He gave up four runs, two of which were earned, and his night probably would have been a lot better had his defense performed well. Five errors by the defense (including three by SS Grant Zawadzki) gave DeKalb County extra outs and opportunities. Mueller received a no-decision. In relief Saturday night, Kurt Kudrecki (Indiana State) pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run. Jeremy Juliot also threw 2/3 of an inning, but kept the Liners off of the scoreboard.
Offensively the Bombers hit the ball well, knocking ten hits. Left fielder Kirby Campbell (Ball State) led the way going 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored. Campbell also reached base on two walks. Kolin Conner (Lincoln Trail CC) went 1-for-2 and reached on three walks. T.J. Thomas (Hofstra) also had a good night, going 1-for-3 and walking twice.
The Bombers fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth on a squeeze play executed by 2B Nick Stoia (Franklin). Stoia layed down the bunt, and pinch runner Brian Norwood (Lewis Univ.) crossed the plate to tie the game.
Jake Rifkin had a forgettable outing, taking the loss after giving up three earned runs in the final two innings. In the tenth with the go-ahead run on third base, DeKalb's Jacob Lueneburg smashed a 2-2 Rifkin fastball over the right field wall to put the Liners up 9-7 and eventually give them the victory. Dubois County moves to 8-11 during the first half of the Prospect League season, while DeKalb County climbs to 8-13.
The Bombers will hit the road Tuesday morning for a two-game series against the West Virginia Miners, who lead the Eastern Division. Their next home game will be a rematch of Monday's game on Thursday, June 30th. It will be Huntingburg Chamber of Commerce Night at League Stadium, and first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 pm EDT.
