Bombers Bounce Back, Beat Gems 2-1 as Billo Dazzles

June 16, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

Only inclement weather could stop Dubois County pitcher Ryan Billo in the Bombers' rain-shortened 2-1 victory over the Quincy Gems Friday at QU Stadium in Quincy, Ill.

Billo threw eight innings of one-run ball for Dubois County while striking out nine. He allowed a triple in the fourth inning to Quincy centerfielder Gregory Allen - who would score on a groundout two batters later - a bunt single to Allen and a groundball single to leftfielder David Kuhne.

That's all - three hits and no walks to go with nine strikeouts, the first six of which were on called third strikes.

It was an effort the Bombers sorely needed after a rough loss the night before in which they blew a five-run ninth inning lead.

Gems starter Sam Coonrod pitched decently as well, throwing seven innings of two-run ball with no walks and seven strikeouts.

But the Bombers scored just enough.

The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when third baseman Cody Daily and first baseman Jeff Zahn led off with singles, with Daily advancing to third on Zahn's chopper that caromed off Coonrod's glove and into center field.

Designated hitter Chris Tavares hit into a double play as Daily scored the game's first run.

Dubois County extended its lead to 2-0 with timely hitting and smart base running. Shortstop Dalton Rouleaux reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Daily struck out, Zahn launched a double to left-center to drive Rouleaux in.

Quincy halved the deficit in the bottom of the inning, and that was all the scoring this ballgame would offer.

With Rouleaux on first in the top of the ninth and two outs, Daily took a called strike before umpire Lou Parker called for a delay due to increasing rain, thunder and lightning. The delay lasted roughly an hour before the game was called.

The Bombers, who improved to 13-3, play in Danville Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Quincy, 10-6, hosts Springfield Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
