NEW YORK - The Arena Football League Board of Directors approved rule changes for the 2006 season during a meeting today at Emerald Pointe Resort at Lake Lanier Islands, Georgia.

Notable rule changes for 2006 include:

- Free substitution on all free kicks

- Placement of ball at the 20-yard line for kicking ball over the net on kickoffs

- Elimination of Ties

"Substitutions on kicks will allow players to stay fresh without interfering with the Ironman concept of the game," said AFL Rules and Competition Committee Co-Chairman and Arizona Rattlers Vice President of Operations GENE NUDO.

The "ball-over-the-net" rule will encourage teams to keep the ball in play.

"The committee's goal is to constantly refine our game and put the best product on the field year-in and year-out. This rule will allow more kick returns, which are among the most exciting plays in our game, and clearly shows the committee's willingness to look for ways to improve the fans' experience," said Nudo.
