Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: Defense was the story of the football game between the Evansville BlueCats and the Lexington Horsemen on Saturday night at Roberts Stadium. The BlueCats lost to the Horsemen 33-26 in what can best be described as a defensive struggle, with half of the points in the game being scored in the 4th quarter. The game was close throughout the evening and went down to the final minute of the contest.
The BlueCats tied the score at 26 with 1:03 to go in the game but that left just enough time for Lexington to have another possession, which resulted in the winning touchdown with 4 seconds left in the game. The BlueCats had one last chance to score, after running the kickoff return out of bounds to stop the clock with 1.5 seconds to go. The BlueCats received field position near midfield as a result of the banked unsportsman-like conduct penalty that was assessed on Lexington from their touchdown on the previous possession. Dewberry's 22-yard pass attempt to the end zone as time expired bounced between players from both teams before falling incomplete. The loss drops the BlueCats to (1-4) on the season while Lexington improves to (4-0).
Defense ruled the game for both teams, as both were able to force turnovers and come up with key stops. The BlueCats defense recovered two fumbles and grabbed two interceptions. The Horsemen recovered two Evansville fumbles and recorded one interception and blocked one kick.
John Winchester led the BlueCats defensively with 10 solo tackles and 7 assisted tackles giving him a total 13.5 tackles in the game including 3.5 tackles for a loss to add to his already league leading total, Winchester also recovered a fumble. Jerrell Hardy added 8.5 tackles including 1.5 tackles for a loss. Defensive back Vernon Turner chipped in 4 tackles in his BlueCats debut. Tarron Acuff recorded 2 tackles and had a big play in the 3rd quarter when he stripped the football from Lexington's Jaquar Sanders to force a fumble and recover the ball on the same play. Sean Bennett and Matt Wycoff each recorded an interception.
The BlueCats held Horsemen running back Derrick Homer to 18 yards on 15 carries. Homer was among the top 3 in the UIF in rushing yards per game entering Saturday's contest.
The BlueCats outgained the Horsemen 183-141 in yards of total offense. The offense was lead by Quarterback Kewan Dewberry who finished the game completing 15 of his 30 passes for 141 yards, 3 touchdowns, and one interception. Two of the touchdown passes went to wide receiver Levron Williams who had five catches in the game for 50 yards and two scores. Levander Segars scored the other touchdown as he caught 4 passes 49 yards. Sean Bennett and Dale Jennings added 3 receptions each.
The Horsemen were led by receiver Harry Lewis, who caught 9 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. Champ Kelly made 13 tackles to lead the Horsemen defensively.
The BlueCats will be idle this week before playing 3 games in a row on the road. After the bye week, the team returns to action on Saturday, May 6th when they travel to Peoria to face the Peoria Rough Riders (0-4). Lexington returns home where they will host the Fort Wayne Freedom (3-2).
The Evansville BlueCats return home on Saturday night, May 27th, when they take on the Ohio Valley Greyhounds in a rematch of Evansville's Week Two victory over the Greyhounds in Wheeling. Kickoff is set for 7:05pm at Roberts Stadium. For tickets, please contact the Roberts Stadium box office.
