Valley Blue Sox News Release

HOLYOKE, Mass.-The Blue Sox have added another pair of players to the roster, adding pitcher Chris Erwin and second baseman Cornell Nixon to the 2014 squad.

Erwin, a freshman right-hander from Grayson, Georgia, was drafted in the 28th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins after a stellar high school career that saw him named to the Georgia Top 100 in his junior and senior seasons. He is 1-1 in three starts, with four relief appearances, for the Owls this season, allowing seven earned runs in 18.1 innings of work while striking out 17 opponents.

"Chris will be one of the more interesting addition to our roster this season," said Blue Sox GM Hunter Golden. "He's a highly projectable lefty who's got excellent stuff. While I think his best days are certainly ahead of him, he brings an incredible set of raw tools to the table that we think will help us immensely this season."

Nixon, also a rookie, hails from Marietta, Georgia, and was named a 2013 All Southeast Region First-Team selection by Perfect Game USA and ranked the #1 overall middle infielder in the state. In nine games, with six starts, he is currently hitting .243 with a .354 on-base percentage, and has scored seven runs and added six RBI.

"Cornell is going to be an incredibly versatile piece for us this season," said Golden. "He brings a lot of speed and the ability to get on base offensively, making him an ideal lead-off hitter; but the other significant piece is his defensive versatility. He made his name primarily playing SS and 2B, but he's also a very good outfielder."
