Blue Ducks tryouts this Sunday
April 11, 2005 - United States Basketball League (USBL)
Brevard Blue Ducks News Release
Melbourne, Florida â Jump shot. Check. Crossover dribble. Check. Slam dunk. Check.
Area hoopsters, who think they've got all the skills to make a career of playing basketball have the chance to prove it this weekend, as the Brevard Blue Ducks hold their annual open tryouts at the Clemente Center at Florida Tech in Melbourne.
The Blue Ducks have been a member of the United States Basketball League (USBL), a minor league to the NBA, for three years. This year however, the Blue Ducks will be playing an independent schedule, a plan brought on by the damage caused by last year's hurricanes, which resulted in a shortage of accommodations in Brevard - which meant that the Blue Ducks had no way of housing their normal out-of-town recruits or providing adequate lodging for visiting teams this season.
The change in plans however, has created a unique opportunity for area basketball players because the Blue Ducks will field a team this year made up entirely of local recruits.
"We're going to be offering basketball players from central Florida and Brevard County in particular, a unique opportunity this year," stated team owner, Mike Richman. "We will be recruiting a local-based Blue Ducks team this year. So instead of having a 1-in-100 chance of making the team through open tryouts, this year the open tryout players will have tremendously increased odds of making the Blue Ducks squad as we will be picking our entire team from the tryouts this year."
So Brevard County players who think they have what it takes to start a basketball career will get a legitimate shot at following their dream of playing professional basketball.
Tryouts will begin at 9:00AM and will run all day. Registration is at 8:15 AM. The normal cost of $125 if registered and paid in advance or $150 at the door will be reduced by $25 for Brevard County residents ($100 if registered and paid in advance, $125 at the door). Checks will be accepted only if paid in advance.
For a tryout registration form or for more information, visit the Blue Ducks website at www.BrevardBlueDucks.com or call (321) 751-BLUE (2583). Registration forms are also available at the Clemente Center at Florida Tech. The tryouts are open to the public to watch.
Duck Notes: The open tryouts will be videotaped this year and are planned to be shown as part of a Blue Ducks TV highlight show expected to air sometime this summer on Brighthouse Networks.
