Blaze Waste Opportunities in Loss
July 21, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
After winning seven consecutive series, the Blaze (55-42) were humbled a little bit when they dropped three of four at home to the Visalia Rawhide. A change in venue and opponent figured to be the perfect remedy for a team on a 3-game losing streak.
That thought proved to be false on Thursday night.
Forrest Wall was 2-4 with 2 RBI as he knocked home Omar Carrizales in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a scoreless game and help the Modesto Nuts (37-60) beat Bakersfield 3-0.
Osmer Morales suffered the defeat despite throwing eight strong innings, but Carrizales was the guy in charge offensively for Modesto.
Carrizales was 3-4 with two runs scored as he also hit an RBI triple in the eighth for good measure. The centerfielder provided all the run support for winning pitcher Yency Almonte (6-8) as he danced his way in and out of trouble in the early parts of the affair.
In the third inning, Alomnte gave up a single to Jordan Cowan, walked Austin Wilson, and then another single to Daniel Torres. With nobody out and the bases load, Almonte dug deep.
Almonte got Drew Jackson to hit a ground ball right to third baseman Josh Fuentes. Fuentes came home for the force play before Almonte struck out Bishop and Mack.
The threat was over, but not the Blaze weren't done.
Bakersfield again loaded the bases in the fourth against Almonte, but he was able to get Torres out on a pop up. Six runners stranded in two innings broke the back of the Blaze as they went silent after that.
Almonte struck out eight batters, walked three, and surrendered three hits. Troy Neiman and Luis Niebla (S, 5) closed things out for Modesto as they improved their second half record to 11-16.
Blaze have now lost four straight as they get set for Game 2 on Friday night. First pitch will be at 7:05pm with David Gascon on the call courtesy of TuneIn Radio and BakersfieldBlaze.com.
