Blaze Sign Returning CHL Defenseman

The Bloomington Blaze, fueled by Mid-Illini Credit Union, has signed returning Central Hockey League defenseman Nicolas Rioux for the 2012-13 season.

Rioux is 6'1" and 205 pounds. He was a rookie last season, started his professional career with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Throughout 65 games with the Bees, Rioux contributed 5 goals, 16 assists, and 44 penalty minutes. He also held a respectable +5 plus/minus rating last season.

"Nicolas is a solid two-way defenseman with a lot of offensive potential," said Blaze Coach Brian Gratz. "He had a strong rookie season last year in Rio Grande and I look for him to be even better this season."

Before his transition into the pros, Rioux played in various leagues from 2004-2011, including Amherst Ramblers of the MJAHL, the Quesnel Millionaires and Prince George Spruce Kings of the BCHL, and St. Cloud State of the WCHA. Rioux was captain and defensive player of the year at Quesnel and assistant captain, MVP, and defensive player of the year at Prince George.
