Joplin Blasters News Release
Yasiel Puig who?
The Joplin Blasters have added Cuban OF Yasser Gomez to the roster for their 2015 Inaugural American Association season.
Gomez joins the Blasters by way of, most recently, the Camden Riversharks in the Atlantic league. But he brings over a decade of experience playing for the Industriales of the Cuban National League, most commonly known as the New York Yankees of Cuba. He is a career .331 hitter with a staggering lifetime .407 on-base percentage, and the versatility to play all three outfield spots.
Gomez' career accolades would fill even the most impressive of trophy rooms. He was awarded the Cuban National Series Rookie of the Year Award for the 1997-98 season after batting .359 and setting a rookie record with 112 hits. Playing as the Cuban National Team's everyday CF, Gomez won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Team Cuba followed that performance up with a Gold medal in the 2001 Baseball World Cup, again with Gomez in center.
"The opportunity to have Yasser play for the Blasters this upcoming season is something we are tremendously excited about," said Blasters' GM Shawn Suarez. "His career to this point speaks for itself, and I hope everyone takes advantage of the opportunity to see him play the game."
The Blasters are the newest member of the South Division in the American Association of Independent Baseball. They will play a 50 home game schedule beginning in May of 2015 at a renovated Joe Becker Stadium, and will be a major entertainment destination for the Four States Community. Ticket information, as well as, general information on the Blasters can be found online at www.joplinblasters.com or by calling (417) 437-6105. Fans are encouraged to reserve their season tickets now to guarantee they don't miss any of this summer's action.
