Blackjacks Come up Short in Season Opener: by the Numbers

The Atlantic City Blackjacks (0-1) started of the season off with a tough loss on Saturday afternoon against the Philadelphia Soul (1-0) at the Wells Fargo Center by a score of 41-48 in front of a crowd of 9,245. The Blackjacks jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but the Soul would battle back.

The Blackjacks quarterback Randy Hippeard had a decent debut for his new team, tallying 18 completions on 26 attempts for 178 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Hippeard leaned on his old teammates LaMark Brown and Kendrick Ings in his passing game. Brown had 8 receptions for 90 yards and 3 touchdowns. Ings had 6 receptions for 41 yards and 1 touchdown. Hippeard also targeted rookie Antwane Grant for 4 receptions, 47 yards, and 1 touchdown. This was Grant's first touchdown in the AFL and kept the ball as a souvenir. Hippeard also had himself 1 rushing touchdown as he snuck the ball across the goal line in a quarterback sneak. Kendrick Ings also had 4 kick returns for 76 yards and accumulated 117 all-purpose yards.

On the defensive side of the ball the Blackjacks had themselves a solid opening night. They limited Soul quarterback Dan Raudabaugh to 21 completions on 31 attempts for only 151 yards and 2 touchdowns. Marvin Ross had the Blackjacks only interception of the game. Arthur Hobbs had the team's most tackles in the game with 9 followed by rookie Kiante Northington with 6. LaRoche Jackson had 5 tackles, Lynden Trail had 3.5, and Marvin Ross had 2. Monte Lewis pitched in with 1.5 tackles and Wes Mauia had 1 tackle. Nick Haag had himself 1 fumble recovery as well.

The next game for the Blackjacks will be their home opener against the Columbus Destroyers (0-1) on Saturday, May 4 at 3:30 pm at Boardwalk Hall.
