Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Even when the Biscuits (77-60) don't have to win games, they still find a way to win them. The Butter and Blue came from behind for a second-straight night, and beat the Mobile BayBears (65-68), 5-3, on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Brock Burke made his ninth start of the season for Montgomery, and had a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI-single by Brett Sullivan. Jake Cronenworth scored the game's first run after singling and extending his hitting streak to a team-high 14 games, tied for third-longest in the Southern League this season.
Burke would allow a first inning solo home run to Zach Houchins, and then an RBI-double to Connor Justus in the second that put the BayBears up, 2-1. The Biscuits didn't have another answer against Mobile starter Joey Gatto, who retired 10-straight batters at one point, until the sixth, when a Jesus Sanchez RBI-double knotted things at two.
In the seventh, Thomas Milone punched a go-ahead RBI-double into the gap in left-center field to put the Biscuits ahead again, 3-2, and was then thrown out at third trying to stretch that double into a league-leading 12
th triple. Sullivan slammed an RBI-triple off the right-center field wall in the eighth, barely missing out on his eighth home run of the season, to make it 4-2.
Burke left after five innings, and then Spencer Jones (1-0) tossed two scoreless frames while facing the minimum. Curtis Taylor came on after Jones and allowed an RBI-single to Zach Gibbons in the eighth, but ultimately slammed the door for his sixth save over two innings, as the Biscuits tacked on a final run in the ninth on a Cronenworth RBI-single.
The 77 wins in the regular season are tied for the second most in team history with the 2015 (77-61) and 2006 clubs (77-62). The Biscuits will go for win number 78 on Saturday when Sam McWilliams (5-7) battles against Jesus Castillo (9-4) at 7:05 PM CT.
Once the regular season ends on Monday, the Biscuits will have an off-day on Tuesday, and will then head to Jackson, Tennessee to take on the Jackson Generals in Games 1 and 2 of the North Division Series next Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6, before returning to Riverwalk Stadium for Game 3 on Friday, September 7.
