San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants saw their nine-game winning streak against Stockton come to an end on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-2 loss to the Ports at Excite Ballpark. Stockton erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take control of the contest en route to evening the series at a game apiece. The setback was only the Giants' (59-45, 19-19 second half) fifth defeat in 20 games versus the Ports this season.

Victor Bericoto (1-for-2, HR, RBI) and Jared Dupere (1-for-3, HR, RBI) hit solo homers to account for both of San Jose's runs in the loss.

Wednesday's contest was even at 1-1 through four innings with the Ports scoring once in the top of the first before the Giants plated a run in the bottom of the second. Manuel Mercedes started on the mound for San Jose and allowed a one-out RBI double to T.J. Schofield-Sam in the top of the first inning as Stockton took the early lead. The Giants then answered in the second when Bericoto belted a 409-foot solo homer to straightaway center. The home run was Bericoto's 10th of the season.

Meanwhile, Mercedes kept the Ports off the board in the second, third and fourth innings. Stockton threatened in the top of the fourth loading the bases with one out, but Mercedes escaped thanks to a double play. The first seven Ports hitters in the top of the fifth though would reach base with six of the runners eventually coming home to score. Caeden Trenkle led off with a double to deep center off of Mercedes. Danny Bautista was then hit by a pitch before Schofield-Sam singled to load the bases. Tommy Stevenson was up next and he hit a grounder to third that Yorlis Rodriguez fielded, but the throw home was dropped by catcher Rayner Santana. The error allowed Trenkle to score as Stockton reclaimed the lead at 2-1.

A bases loaded walk to Daniel Susac followed to force home another run before new pitcher Willian Suarez uncorked a wild pitch allowing Schofield-Sam to score for a 4-1 Ports advantage. Following another walk, Brennan Milone delivered an RBI single to make it 5-1. Two batters later, Dereck Salom was hit by a pitch to bring home a run before Trenkle's RBI groundout pushed the Stockton lead to 7-1. The Ports sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth scoring six runs on three hits. Giants pitching also issued two walks and hit two batters during the inning.

Stockton stretched their lead to 9-1 when Stevenson connected for a two-run home run off of Suarez in the top of the sixth.

Dupere's solo homer in the bottom of the eighth - a drive to straightaway center - brought the score to its final margin of 9-2. It was Dupere's fourth homer in his last eight games.

Ports starter James Gonzalez (1-6) earned the win after tossing a season-high six innings with only one run allowed. Gonzalez surrendered five hits, walked three and struck out four.
