Los Angeles Riptide News Release

BOSTON, Mass. - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional lacrosse league, announced Friday that Los Angeles Riptide defenseman Greg Bice has been named as the 2007 New Balance Major League Lacrosse Sportsman of the Year, according to Commissioner David Gross. The award was based on votes submitted by the general managers and head coaches of the ten MLL teams.

The New Balance Sportsman of the Year recognizes a player who has consistently demonstrated sportsmanship through tenacity, determination and fair play on and off the field over the course of the regular season.

As a member of the Western Conference champion Riptide, Bice has been a great ambassador to the organization and the league during the 2007 season. He has organized after-work athletic and wellness programs at Progress Energy, a company in North Carolina where he is currently employed. In addition, he coaches youth lacrosse in the community and will be moving to Honduras with his wife, Emily, to teach science and math at an orphanage for a year.

On the field, Bice played in all 12 games for the Riptide and scored a goal in their June 30 victory over the San Francisco Dragons. He also had two assists during the year in addition to 39 ground balls.

The 2007 NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend will begin on Saturday, August 25 with a pair of semi-final games. The defending MLL champion Philadelphia Barrage will play against the Denver Outlaws while Rochester plays Los Angeles. The two semi-final winners will meet on Sunday, August 26 in the NB ZIP MLL Championship Game at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN2 HD.
