Bells Take Game 1 Of Division Series
August 10, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release
The Bells were able to win the first game of their division series against the Victoria HarbourCats Tuesday night by a score of 3-2.
The Bells got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the 1st. Andru Cardenas led things off with a single to right field, he then moved to second on a groundout and to third on a flyout. This allowed David Banuelos to rope a single to center to drive in Cardenas and make the score 1-0 Bells heading to the second.
The Bells tacked on another run in the 2nd. Austin Shenton got things going with a leadoff walk and a batter later Dean Lawson ripped a double down the left field line that allowed Shenton to rumble around and score all the way from first. That extended the Bells' lead to 2-0 going to the 3rd.
Victoria was able to score 2 in the top of the 3rd to tie the game up. Matt Lautz and Jarron Silva got things started with back to back singles to give them runners on 1st and 2nd. A batter later Ben Polshuk lined one into left for a 2 RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bells were able to take the lead with a run in the 8th. Chase Strumpf led off with a double down the line in right and David Banuelos moved him over to third with a sac bunt. After a walk to Jake Vieth Gunnar Schubert lined one into center field to score Strumpf and give the Bells the lead at 3-2 and that would be all the runs the Bells needed.
Jon Olsen had a brilliant outing on the mound for the Bells tonight, the right hander from UCLA went 7.1 innings while only allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits and striking out 3, he also earned the win. Nick Silva picked up where Olsen left off retiring the final 2 batters of the 8th. Sam Hellinger then came in and slammed the door for the save.
With the win the Bells are in the driver's seat with a 1-0 lead over the HarbourCats in the divison series. The series now shifts back to Victoria where the Bells have to win 1 of 2 games in Victoria to advance to the championship series.
The Bells take the field again tomorrow Wednesday August 10th at 7:05 for the second game of their possible three game division series against the HarbourCats at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria. The pregame show starts at 6:35 with Tom Prizeman on mixlr.com/bellinghambells.
