Bells Comeback Stuns Victoria

A Matt DiLeo three run homerun over the left field fence tied the game and a five run top half of the 10th allowed the Bells to defeat the Victoria HarbourCats Thursday night at Royal Athletic Park.

Bellingham, who didn't get a runner on base until sixth and had no hits heading to the top of the eighth inning, trailed 3-0. Matt Ruff walked to begin the threat. Danny Casals earned the first hit off Will McAffer to put runners on first and second, and end McAffer's outing. Holden Lyons (3-2) entered and fanned Austin Shenton for the first out of the inning. DiLeo followed with the towering homerun over the left field fence to tie the game and sent the Bells dugout into a frenzy. The Oakland University product's first homerun of the year tied the game at 3 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Brian Way worked a scoreless eighth inning, punctuating his night with a strikeout. Josh Zavisubin tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to keep the game tied heading to the tenth inning.

In the tenth inning, Gunnar Schubert led off with a double, and after Andru Cardenas bunted him over to third, Shane Hanon and Chase Strumpf walked to load the bases. David Banuelos brought Schubert home with a sacrifice fly to put the Bells in front, 4-3. Hanon scored on a Justin Polzin RBI single. Casals capped the rally with a bases clearing two RBI triple, which he scored on when the throw to third sailed out of play. Casals touched the dish to put the Bells in front 8-3 heading to the bottom half of the 10th.

Spencer Howard earned his third start of the summer, and the Cal Poly product tossed five innings of three run baseball while fanning six. Bellingham native David Stealy fired two innings for the Bells. Following Way and Zavisubin in the eighth and ninth innings, Sam Hellinger continued his dominance in the month of July, retiring the side without allowing a hit. In eight appearances in the month, Hellinger has not allowed a hit and has a zero ERA.

The Bells return to the field against the Victoria HarbourCats tomorrow night. First pitch will be thrown a 6:35, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:10 with Tom Prizeman on mixlr.com/bellinghambells.
