Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Hidalgo, Texas --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced that Jason Cirone will be the team's player/assistant coach this coming season.
Cirone (chi-ROW-na), 35, is a Toronto native who brings 19 years of professional experience to the Valley, including three games with the NHL's Winnipeg Jets in 1991-92. He played the last six seasons in Europe, including the last five with Asiago HC. That is the team that Killer Bees Head Coach Tony Martino helmed in 2005-06.
"Jason is a complete player with lots of experience," said Martino. "He will bring not only offensive skills, but he takes pride in playing defense. He has experience at basically every level of hockey, so hopefully he can share that with some of the younger players to help them develop."
The 5-foot-10, 209-pound center was a third-round pick of Winnipeg (No. 46 overall) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He played for Italy in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games at Torino and scored a goal and an assist in five games with the Italian National Team. He also competed for Italy at the 2006 World Championships in Riga, Latvia, during May.
"It's good to be coming to the Valley to work with Tony and start something new," said Cirone. "I like to teach, so it'll be fun working with the young guys. I like to think I'll bring a consistent game. I'm a little bit of a scorer and a little bit of a passer."
The Killer Bees are getting ready for the fourth season of CHL action in the Rio Grande Valley. Opening weekend has been set for October 20 and 21, 2006. The complete CHL schedule is expected to be released in late July. Season tickets and corporate sponsorships are available now by calling (956) 843-PUCK.
