Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees scored four unanswered goals Sunday night against the Odessa Jackalopes to end their three game overall and home winless streak at three games, and extend the Jackalopes winless streak to nine games, with a 4-1 victory at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Tx.

The Killer Bees started off with the game's first 7 shots on goal, but it was Odessa scoring first and John Bossio doing the honors. In a scramble in front of the net, Bossio was able to play a rebound that caromed off the right post and he slid the puck past Killer Bees goaltender Jeff Levy.

Rio Grande Valley tied the contest 7:39 into the second period of play with a power play goal by Ryan Shmyr. The Bees forward set up in front of the net, screening Jackalopes netminder Mike Gorman, and Bill Newson's shot from the left side was initially stopped by Gorman, but Shmyr dove to the rebound in the right slot and backhanded it past Gorman for his seventh goal of the season. During 4-on-4 play with 4:47 remaining in the second period, Andrew Taylor came free streaking down the left side and fired a rocket from the top of the left circle that cruised past Gorman to give the Killer Bees a 2-1 lead. The Bees extended their lead with a pair of third period goals. Jason Tessier picked up his own rebound from the left side and took the puck ,in momentum, behind the net and wrapped it around the right post, beating a sliding Gorman 5:09 into the period. Bees forward Bill Newson set up Roger Holeczy in the high slot for the game's final goal, as Holeczy lifted the puck over Gorman and into the top of the net with 6:38 remaining.

The Bees improves to 16-17-6 and within one-standing point of Austin for second place of the CHL's Southeast Division, while Odessa's record drops to 13-24-2, giving the Jackalopes a CHL low winning percentage of 35.0%. The Bees and Jackalopes will take a short time off for the CHL all-star break and will return to action Friday, with Odessa hosting Fort Worth and the Killer Bees hosting Corpus Christi.
