
Beat to Face Freedom in Space City Shootout on October 19

ATLANTA (September 25, 2002) - The Atlanta Beat and Washington Freedom today announced their plans to face off in the Space City Shootout, an exhibition match to be played on October 19, 2002 at 5 p.m. CT in Houston, Texas, at Rice University's Track & Soccer Stadium.
The Beat versus Freedom exhibition will showcase some of the best players in the women's game today. Briana Scurry and Cindy Parlow, members of the 1996 Gold medal winning Olympic team and 1999 Women's World Cup champion team, will be on hand for the Beat. Also playing for Atlanta will be Canadian National Team stars Charmaine Hooper and Sharolta Nonen.
The Freedom showcases the most recognized player in the women's game in international scoring leader and longtime U.S. Women's National Team star Mia Hamm, as well as WUSA Rookie of the Year Abby Wambach. The Freedom's also features Mexican Women's National Team star Monica Gerardo and a member of Finland's National Team Anne Makinen.
Tickets for the exhibition are $14 in advance and $17 on game day (all seats general admission). Individual and discounted group tickets can be purchased at the Rice University Ticket office, located on the Rice University campus in the northeast corner of Autry Court or by phone at (713) 348-4068. Group tickets are being sold in packages of four tickets and 20 tickets. The price of the four-ticket package is $50 and the 20-ticket package is $240.
The city of Houston is no stranger to women's soccer, as Houston annually hosts the Women's College Classic, which usually features NCAA women's soccer powerhouse North Carolina. Houston has also been the host of two international matches featuring the U.S. Women's National Team. The last U.S. Women's National Team match played in Houston was in December of 2000, as the U.S. women faced Mexico in an international friendly. The U.S. won 3-2 behind two goals from the Beat's Cindy Parlow.
The Houston Women's Soccer Association (HWSA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the growth of amateur women's soccer in greater Houston, is hosting the Space City Shootout.
The Atlanta Beat is one of eight professional women's soccer teams that make up the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), the world's premier women's soccer league.
