March 18, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
Atlanta Beat News Release

ATLANTA (Tuesday, March 18, 2003) - The Atlanta Beat continued its preseason play and exhibition schedule last week, as the team faced the University of Tennessee Lady Vols and the Auburn University women's team. The Beat blanked the Vols 3-0 on Wednesday, March 12 in Knoxville and defeated the Lady Tigers 5-0 on Sunday, March 16, in Fayetteville, Georgia.

The match versus Auburn University was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 15, but was postponed due to unplayable field conditions. The match was played in Fayetteville, Georgia, at McCurry Park on Sunday and the Beat delivered a win in impressive fashion.

Emily Burt continued to perform well in the preseason as she notched a goal and an assist. Along with Burt, Homare Sawa, Abby Crumpton, Yayoi Kobayashi, and Kristin Warren also scored in the Beat's 5-0 win.

On Wednesday, March 12, the Beat faced the Lady Vols of the University of Tennessee and defeated them 3-0 at UT Soccer Complex in Knoxville. The Beat notched a clean sheet in this game as well, defeating the Vols 3-0. Burt scored two goals in the victory and German forward Conny Pohlers scored the other.

Tom Stone quotes heading into the final week before team is announced:

"The tone of preseason goes to a new level in this final week. We are facing two WUSA teams before the final roster is named, so for someone to make this team they are going to have to show that they are capable of contributing against WUSA competition."

"The team is progressing nicely and certain players have begun to distinguish themselves over the last few weeks. Conny Pohlers, Melanie Wilson, and Kylie Bivens are a few names that come to mind. I think our veterans are sensing that this could be a special team and, as a result, are providing good leadership to the new players."
