Hershey Bears News Release
HERSHEY - The 2009 Calder Cup Champion HERSHEY BEARS announced today the team will vastly expand its radio network for the 2010-11 season. Four new AM stations and a new HD Radio outlet have been added, as well as an upgraded internet stream to listen online. The announcement was made today by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.
Longtime BEARS flagship station WQIC 100.1 returns for its sixth consecutive season on the BEARS Radio Network. Based in Lebanon, the FM home of the BEARS has carried three Calder Cup Finals on its airwaves since 2006, and will carry a fourth Finals against either Hamilton or Texas next week. WTKT-AM, known as 1460 The Ticket, anchors the newly added AM network of stations in 2010-11. Based in Harrisburg, The Ticket will air all 80 games next season to Harrisburg, Dauphin County and parts of Cumberland County. The station carries "The Old Barn Hockey Show", the popular hockey themed sports talk show going into its third season in 2010-11.
For the first time, BEARS hockey will be available on HD Radio as well. WRVV-FM 97.3 HD2 in Harrisburg will carry all regular season and postseason games throughout central Pennsylvania on the strength of its massive HD signal. With an HD receiver, fans will be able to hear the BEARS with the highest audio quality ever heard. The BEARS Radio Network will also have a new internet streaming service next season, as WHP580.com will stream all regular season and postseason games online. The number one rated station in central PA, WHP-580 will stream the audio of all BEARS games on its website next season at www.WHP580.com
BEARS hockey returns to York County next season, with the addition of WOYK-AM 1350 as a network affiliate. The 5,000 watt AM sports talker will air a large portion of HERSHEY games in 2010-11, giving the Chocolate and White coverage it has not enjoyed in York in more than a decade.
WPDC-AM, ESPN Radio 1600, will also join the BEARS Radio Network in 2010-11. ESPN 1600 will carry the majority of HERSHEY'S 2010-11 schedule on its airwaves, serving Elizabethtown, Middletown, and Mount Joy in Dauphin and Lancaster counties.
WLPA-AM returns to the fold for 2010-11, as the home of the BEARS in Lancaster County. Fox Sports Radio 1490 will also carry the majority of HERSHEY'S 2010-11 season to its listeners in Lancaster and beyond. WLPA-AM previously carried BEARS hockey as recently as the 2007-08 season.
The BEARS also announced today that John Walton, the "Voice of the BEARS" since 2002, has signed a new three-year contract with the team that will keep him in HERSHEY through the 2012-13 season. Walton, who will call his 1,000th American Hockey League game in 2010-11, will be heading into his ninth season as the play-by-play voice of the team this fall, and will be the longest tenured HERSHEY broadcaster in team history when the term of the new three-year agreement comes to a close.
Hockey talk on the airwaves will light up central PA after Saturday night home games next season, with the all-new "Old Barn Saturday Night" on the BEARS Radio Network. The new call-in show will air for one hour after every Saturday home game next season, offering the opportunity to call into the radio booth and talk about the game with John Walton and Frank Schofield. The show will air after the postgame show on Saturday nights on 1460 The Ticket and select BEARS Radio Network affiliates.
The BEARS will face either the Hamilton Bulldogs or the Texas Stars in the 2010 Calder Cup Finals, with the team and schedule to be announced Wednesday night at the conclusion of the 2010 Western Conference Finals. The series is tied at three games apiece with Game 7 scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the first two games of the 2010 Calder Cup Finals at Giant Center are on sale now at the arena box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
