February 20, 2013 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Newark Bears News Release
Newark Bears manager Garry Templeton will be introduced to the public for the first time on Thursday, February 21 at 4:30 p.m. The pre-season press conference will be hosted by the Bears' owner, Danielle Dronet and their pitching coach, Ralph Citarella. The event will take place at Eagle Academy, which is located at 66 Muhammad Ali Avenue in Newark.
Templeton, a three-time National League All-Star, leads Newark into the 2013 season. The Bears, who have re-acquired ace Mike Ness and added key players such as veteran outfielders J.J. Sherrill and Jamar Walton, hope to compete for the Can-Am League championship.
New Jersey's first all-boys public school, Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark, is partnering with the Bears to launch an exciting new baseball experience for its scholars and first baseball season. The partnership will include the creation and support of the Eagle Academy baseball team as well as collaborative development initiatives for Eagle Academy and the Newark Bears.
The school's team will be named the Newark Eagles-honoring the Negro League team that once represented the city in the 30's and 40's. This partnership will also feature mentoring opportunities for students, a mural project that will be featured at the ballpark, and other future innovative community development initiatives. Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark and the Bears invite media and fans alike to join them in support of the revitalization of baseball in the community, and the young lives it will touch.
The Bears open their season on May 17 at 7:05 p.m. at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
