Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, October 13—The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club is teaming up with the Newark Preschool Council for several events that will benefit local area youngsters in the month of October.

Bears mascot Rip-n-Ruppert will be visiting seven of the Newark Preschool Council Head Start Program centers in the next two weeks to spread good cheer. Among the highlights of Ruppert's visits will be the reading of a baseball story by a Bears staff member to the assembled children while Ruppert playfully acts out the story.

The first visit by Rip-n-Ruppert will take place on Monday, October 18th when the Bears loveable mascot drops in on the NPC Edna R. Thomas Center; and the final visit will take place on Wednesday, October 27th at the NPC Sharpe James Center. The complete schedule of dates and centers is listed below.

"The Bears organization understands the importance of being active within the Newark community, especially when it comes to providing a positive experience for the kids in our city," said Bears Senior Vice President and General Manager Dean Rivera. "We are very proud to team up with such a leading local institution like the Newark Preschool Council."

For the past 38 years the Newark Preschool Council has headed up the local Head Start Program as well as many other inner-city programs. The NPC currently runs important programs for Early Education Services, Adult Education, Male Involvement Initiatives, Food Stamp Community Outreach and Literacy Campaigns.

The Bears will also hold their first annual Fall Fest, with free admission, at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Saturday, October 30th from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM. The Fall Fest will be highlighted by pumpkin picking and painting, a Halloween costume parade and best costume contest, local vendors manning arts and crafts stations on the concourse and raffles, prizes and giveaways. In addition Investors Savings Bank will donate several money pumpkins which, if picked, will provide cash prizes.

Those members of the media seeking more information or looking to cover one of the events should contact Mark Gallego, the Newark Bears Director of Fan Development, at (973) 848-1000, ext. 107.
